What has happened to the Friday Night Lights?

Ok while I realize I am getting older (as a matter of fact I can add one more year to the tally on Tuesday), I felt reallllllly old on Friday night at the local high school football game.

It was also very evident that I was not in the good ole South watching the game. A few observations:

• Gelato at the game (you know that thick ice cream kinda stuff)


• Jamba Juice Trailer (smoothie company)


• Quesadilla's fresh off the grill


• last but certainly not least....Starbucks Trailer--is nothing safe anymore????


• All the Seniors where shirts with their names on them--now not a t-shirt, a custom-made Nike bsketball-type sleeveless jersey. I heard a parent say they each cost more than $100


• The stands 1/2 full on the homeside, 1/4 full on the visitor side--the visiting team is like 15 miles away. Geez, we drove 1+ hours sometimes in high school


• no more homemade cheerleader signs (you know "beat the Tigers", "Go Team", etc crafted on butcher block paper and lining the fence--oh now, they have permanent banners they take with them.


• The big paper sign the team runs thru--it too is a plastic banner and they just drop it on the ground and the team runs over it.


• no more passing a hat around at the end of the game to collect $$ to feed the team dinner afterwards.


• Then of course toss in all the piercings, tatoos, etc on the high school set and that just made it even more strange

Now please leave me a comment if these changes have taken place back home and I am just out of the loop!!!

There were some things that were nice to see:

• the band--very good, yet still mostly the geeks (hope I don't offend anyone--this was the case when I was in school)


• the band played the same touch down song we did


• The student section--stood the whole game


• stadium seats--still just as hard and uncomfortable

Overall, we had a great time and Sofia keeps asking to go back, so I think we will make a plan to see the home games.

Nicholas Sparks

So while reading fiction may or may not make me the most well-educated person in the country, I do love the fiction. My favorite of course.....Nicholas Sparks (as seen above). I have read them all and I must say I don't think I have ever finished one without tears. I just finished this one (it is an older one I had just missed):

I am also very excited about the movie coming out next week for this book:

I am sure it will be a tearfest--oh and what's even better--it stars Richard Gere. I'm just sayin!

What was that??

Ok, that was one of the most bizarre football games ever! Well, I mean a win is a win, but come on now, you can only play like that for so long. The picture above was most certainly the best moment of the game!

Such a Happy Girl Right Now

The horsemanship class was great! Sofia learned about safety, grooming and tacking up a pony. She also got to ride twice. She had a really great time. At the end of class the instructor drew a number for a prize and Sofia won! She got a shirt, coloring book, toy horse and ribbon. All of the other children got goodie bags as well. It was such a great day, we will certainly go back for another class and maybe lessons, once soccer is over. The horse's name is Eeyore, and he is a rescue that the farm is bringing back to good health.

My little Cheerleader

Well the cheer performance went pretty well. She was a little scared she said when they came out onto the field, and I think you can tell by the look on her face--no real cheery smiles or anything. I could not see her very well because she was on the 2nd row. Anyway, afterward she said she would like to do it again and next time she wants to be able to watch the football game and see the band (more comments about high school football in AZ later). So we will probably go see the home games this season, since they are just right up the street.

Busy Weekend and Soccer

Yesterday we went and picked out Sofia's soccer ball and shin guards. She starts soccer practice on Monday and then her first game is next weekend. I can't wait to see how she does. There will certainly be pictures of that.

Tonight is the cheerleading performance (from the clinic) at the high school football game. All the kids who came to the clinic, get to perform on the field at half-time. I hope to be able to get video of this. They should all be very cute in their navy shorts and Desert Vista T-Shirts. She says she is excited--we will see once we get there.

Tomorrow Sofia is going to a Tiny Tots Preschool Horsmanship class. It is a surprise for her. I found out about yesterday, while scanning Craigs Lists for pony rides for her birthday. It is 1 1/2 hours and all the kids get to ride. They only allow 6 kids in the class and she was the last one. So I think she should have a really good time. It has started to cool off a little bit in the mornings so I hope it will be pleasant.

Saturday, I am excited I will be able to watch a little bit of WAAAAAAAAR EAGLE football on TV (thank you ESPN2).

Other than that, just house cleaning this weekend realllllly good since all of my coworkers will be at my house on Wednesday for the baby shower. This actually should not be too much work since I cleaned a lot last weekend as well.

On a side note, Sofia is now up to 10 green peas with her dinner. Tonight should be 11, but we might take a break today since it is Football Friday.

Well I don't think so! Just a few shots of the fine feathered friends residing in my kitchen and dining area.

House tour continued

So here is the master bedroom. Lot's of recent finds in this room too. The comforter set is probably the oldest thing in the room--about 6 years. I did cover it with a new duvet, but I love all the pillows that came with it and just can't part with them. So I am happy with it--for now. Favorite item in this room is the huge $5.00 picture over the bed. Least favorite thing--ugh those blinds, but it is a rental so nothing I can do.

My recent treasures

As promised, the PBK table purchased at the GW for $3.99 over the weekend, now living in the playroom. Perfect height for Sofia to color at or put together puzzles, which is what you see on top of it now.

Also, a few weeks back I mentioned my fabulous $9.00 chair. I love it. Perfect color for the family room.

Baby Shower tablescape test run

I am hosting a surprise baby shower at my house in a couple of weeks and started playing with the table today. What do you think?

The chairs will be removed from the table so don't let those distract you.

Cream and clear servig pieces, a large floral arrangemet will go up on the pedestal, I have my silver baby pieces (which need to be polished), little birds nest under the cloche and ribbons are going to be strewn about as well. Also, ignore the pastel pacifiers on the tray up front, Sofia was helping. I am thinking I need more height, so I may put a diaper cake on the pedestal and do more smaller flower arrangements? The diaper cake would have real flowers as well on it. Maybe I need a 3 tiered plate rack--I have one. She is having a boy by the way!

She just might be a cheerleader afterall...

So as you all know, Sofia has attended a couple of cheer clinics, with mixed enthusiasm. This coming Friday night is her half-time debut at the high school that taught the last clinic. We are going, because she gets her shirt, poms and picture. However, she told me today she is really looking forward to her formance--that's performance to you and me. Anyway, while we were out and about over the weekend (yes at a Goodwill), we came across a cheerleader outfit and she said she HAD to have it. So we got it ($2) and took it home, she told me to wash it as soon as I could. So today, she pretty much lived in the outfit. She actually surprised me with how much of the cheers she remembered from the clinics. I will certainly have film and video from the game on Friday night. I did also come across a few treasures at the Goodwill (yes, I know) the best of which was a Pottery Barn Kids playroom table for .....$3.99 yep, my Goodwill hook-up set me up nice! Also for those of you keeping track of the number of GW shopping trips--just to put your mind at ease, there have been 4 car/truck loads of stuff taken to the GW. I will have GW pics tomorrow.

Yummy, Yummy Peas in Sofia's Tummy

Ok so many of you know that Sofia does not eat ANY fruits or vegetables EXCEPT black olives and I really don't think they have much value so, it is forever a struggle at our house. Now, admittedly, mom has difficulty sticking things out and following through, but I am really trying to make an effort. So last Monday, I made a chicken casserole and then asked Sofia to pick which veggie she wanted and she of course said none, so I picked peas. I then showed her that if you eat the peas with the other stuff she liked (chicken and cream of chicken soup in the casserole) then you would not even taste the peas. Well, after tears and a fuss she consumed 2 peas. Yes, 2--that is huge. So on Tuesday, we had leftovers and she consumed 3 peas, in the same fashion--hidden with the chicken and still crying. On Wednesday, she consumed 4 peas with macaroni and cheese. Yesterday we took a break and she had chicken nuggets and she asked, hey, where are the peas! So I told her we could have them today and she advised that she had to have 5 today. So big improvement at our house.

Also, last night she ate a whole lot of those Veggi Chips--they are salted and sort of taste like really airy regular chips. She loved them. They are made from like spinach and tomoato powder or something. Anyway, it was sort of a veggie.

Do cowgirls wear hairbows?

I don't think so. Not my normal outfit planning. I'm sure we had something a little more "western" at home. Oh well, that's what happens when you just get in the car and drive!
